DEREK DRYMON

Derek Drymon was born and raised in New Jersey and has always had a love for comics and drawing. As a kid he took classes at the Joe Kubert School of Cartooning before heading off to School of Visual Arts to become an illustrator. Derek was recruited by Disney feature animation for their internship program in Florida. Derek moved out to California and was hired by Nickelodeon in 1993 where he worked on shows like Hey Arnold, Catdog and Action League Now. It was on Rocko’s Modern Life where Derek met Stephen Hillenburg.

In 1996/97 Derek worked with Steve to help develop Spongebob Squarepants for Nickelodeon. Derek was creative director of the series and also co-wrote and co-produced the first feature length movie.

Following his time at SpongeBob, Derek was executive producer for the first season of Adventure Time at Cartoon Network. At Dreamworks Derek was a story artist on movies like Kung Fu Panda, Shrek 4 and was head of story on Penguins of Madagascar. Derek also wrote and drew stories for SpongeBob Comics. He was Supervising Director of custom content for marketing at Illumination. He directed Hotel Transylvania Transformania and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. Derek is currently directing a new animated feature at Sony Pictures Animation.
